Time to Rise: A Call for Focus in a Time of Crisis

Lucas Bennett

It seems lately that any attempt at a meaningful conversation about anything affecting our lives, especially with someone ideologically different than us, devolves into culture war talking points. An attempt to understand someone’s thoughts on the impact of wealth inequality or the loss of home ownership in the US becomes a shouting match about drag show book readings or trans children in sports. While these issues undoubtedly matter to many, I cannot help but feel a deep frustration at out inability to stay focused on the issues that affect us all. In a time when the U.S. is facing economic turmoil, rampant inequality, and an ever-growing concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few, it seems that too many of us are fixated on cultural battles that, while important, distract us from the more pressing concerns that affect our everyday lives. It struck me how easy it is to get caught up in these divisive discussions while ignoring the systems that are squeezing the life out of the middle and working classes. This is how they want it. They want to distract us with seemingly unsolvable culture wars while they slip their hands in our pockets. The real battles—against monopolies, oligarchy, and political corruption—are largely left out of the conversation, and in my opinion, they deserve far more of our attention and action. Now, more than ever, it is crucial that we focus on these underlying issues that shape the future of our society, because, in the long run, they are the ones that truly threaten our collective well-being.

This is what "Time to Rise" is all about—a call to focus, resist distraction, and take action against the very systems that are eroding our democracy and future. It’s easy to become distracted by the noise around us, by issues that are being carefully crafted to provoke anger and division, but while we are looking one way, the powerful are working tirelessly in the other. The rich, the billionaires, the oligarchs, and the corrupt politicians are focused on a singular goal: transferring our wealth and power into their hands, leaving us with less and less control over our lives and our futures.

The Dangers of Authoritarianism, Oligarchy, and Wealth Inequality

The threat of authoritarianism is real and growing in many parts of the world, including here in the United States. The erosion of democratic principles, the silencing of dissent, and the concentration of political power in the hands of a few are all signs that we are inching toward a system where those in power dictate every aspect of our lives. Authoritarian regimes are fueled by fear and manipulation, and the rise of these regimes thrives in environments where people are distracted, misled, and divided. In the U.S., this threat often manifests in the form of political polarization and cultural battles, keeping us so busy fighting among ourselves that we fail to recognize the slow, methodical consolidation of power by a small group of elites.

At the heart of this authoritarian shift is oligarchy—the unchecked control of government, industry, and culture by a tiny, powerful minority. We see it in every aspect of modern life: from massive tax breaks for the wealthiest individuals and corporations, to the relentless outsourcing of jobs that leaves working Americans struggling. The growing wealth inequality in the U.S. is staggering—while the top 1% have seen their wealth increase exponentially, the rest of us are left fighting for scraps. The gulf between the richest and poorest in this country is wider than it has ever been. According to a report from the Institute for Policy Studies, the wealthiest 1% now control more than 40% of the nation's wealth, while the bottom 90% control just 25%. This disparity is not the result of natural market forces; it’s the direct outcome of policies that benefit the rich at the expense of the rest of us.

We have reached a point where wealth is no longer tied to merit or hard work. Instead, it’s tied to connections, inherited privilege, and political influence. The concentration of wealth and power creates an environment where the few control the levers of power—both economic and political—and the many are left without the resources to challenge it. The billionaire class uses its influence to push for policies that benefit them, including tax cuts, deregulation, and cuts to social programs that help the working and middle classes.

Resisting the Gaslighting, Distraction, and Redirection

The most dangerous part of this growing oligarchy is that it works to divide and distract us. We are constantly bombarded with cultural issues, debates about "cancel culture," and moral panics designed to draw our attention away from the real problems. These issues are important, no doubt, but they are being used as a smokescreen. While we argue over cultural divides, the billionaires are amassing more wealth, corporations are consolidating more power, and corrupt politicians are stripping away our rights and freedoms, piece by piece. It’s like a magic trick: look here, not there.

This is called gaslighting—a psychological manipulation designed to make us question reality and focus on the wrong things. It’s easy to get caught up in the noise, to feel like our values are under attack, or that we need to defend a culture under siege. But while we fight over the surface-level issues, the real transfer of wealth and power continues in the shadows. The media, corporations, and political elites have mastered the art of redirection, pulling our focus away from core issues that affect our lives and toward battles that have little to do with the structural problems at play.

We must remain vigilant and focused on the real issues that threaten our society: the concentration of power, the manipulation of our democracy, and the unsustainable economic inequality that leaves so many struggling while the rich get richer. We cannot afford to be distracted. The system is rigged, and it’s getting harder and harder for the average person to break through the noise and demand change.

The Call to Action: Time to Rise

"Time to Rise" is dedicated to resisting the systems of power that are actively working to keep us in the dark, distracted, and divided. Here, we will shine a light on the growing threats of authoritarianism, oligarchy, and wealth inequality, and we will explore how these forces are undermining our democracy and our economy. We will expose the systems of power at play and discuss how we, as individuals and a collective, can push back against the systems that seek to control us.

But this isn't just about highlighting the problems; it's about taking action. It is about al of us coming together in this fight. You and your neighbors are being robbed of your money and authority regardless of your political ideology. This we share across all boundaries. We need to resist the gaslighting, to reject the distractions, and to stay focused on the task at hand: fighting for a more just, equitable, and free society. The stakes are high, and it’s time to rise above the noise, unite against the real threats to our freedom, and demand the changes that are needed for all of us to thrive.

This is a call to action for those who are ready to fight back against the tide of corruption and concentration of power. It is a call to stay focused, stay strong, and keep our eyes on the prize: a democratic society that works for everyone, not just the few at the top.

The time to rise is now.
